10 Musical Switchups That Fans Absolutely Hated

8. Linkin Park Goes Electronica

The beauty behind Linkin Park in the early days was how much their sound seemed singular to the band. As much as you could tell they were borrowing from a little bit of hip hop and a little bit of metal, the way they combined their influences into a tapestry of sounds is what made albums like Meteora so perfect. Then those electronic elements started to get a little too big for their britches on A Thousand Suns.

Compared to the blander sound that fans were already hearing on Minutes to Midnight, this felt like every nightmare that they had was confirmed, as Linkin Park dove head first into the electronica pool with a concept record about post nuclear warfare. Although most people washed their hands of this record before the end of 2010, time has been much kinder to itthan you might realize.

Though far from being their best, this is a nice dive into LP wanting to make something akin to Kid A by Radiohead, with electronics used as a heavy garnish on some of the rawest tunes they've ever created, from the exhausted energy of Robot Boy to the transcendent experience of Waiting for the End. While A Thousand Suns might not be the first thing people think of when it comes to Linkin Park, the bright spots on this album make it underrated all the same.
