10 Musicians That Got Seriously Injured Onstage
1. James Hetfield in Montreal
The idea of having both Metallica and Guns N Roses together on the same bill had the potential to be one of the biggest concerts in the history of rock music. Here were two bands selling out stadiums on their own terms, only to come together to headline massive sets night after night. There's a certain element of danger when you have a tour that size too, and James Hetfield became all too aware of that fact when they came storming into Montreal.
With Metallica being first on the bill that night, James began to make it through the first songs of the set before coming to a lull during Fade to Black. Mistiming where he should be on stage, James kept walking forward and back before finding himself standing above a canister that was about to shoot up chemical flames from the stage. After dodging it, James was in no shape to perform, as all of his strings melted off his guitar and all of his skin started to deteriorate.
While the crew were able to get James to a doctor to be treated professionally, the rest of the crowd weren't as lucky, as Guns N Roses cut their set short as well and the fans tearing the venue to shreds after being cheapened out of two shows. It was going to be an uphill battle from here, but James was back out on the road in just a few weeks after the accident, complete with a bandaged arm and one of the band's guitar techs subbing in as his rhythm guitarist.
