10 Musicians That Walked Away From HUGE Bands
1. Jason Newsted - Metallica
Any band that's been touring for years on end starts to feel like its own little family after a while. Since you see each other day in day out and connect with each other musically in a way few artists can, there's always a bond that links you all together at some point. If you're treated like dirt from the moment that you've signed on though, it makes sense why you'd want out as soon as possible.
When Jason Newsted first got the call to be in Metallica, he was one of the biggest fans that you could imagine, which sent the rest of the band up the wall. Trying to take out all of their aggression on him, Jason became the scapegoat for all of the band's negative emotions, especially coming off of the tragic death of former bassist Cliff Burton.
Along with having his bass down on And Justice For All, Jason never really found his place in the band, often occupying his own separate space onstage and having a larger than life presence that seemed completely separate to everyone else in the band. Once he decided to step off though, Metallica started to fall apart, with James Hetfield going into rehab before finally putting the band back together in the early '00s as part of their group therapy sessions. By the time that Robert Trujillo was drafted in as the new bassist, Metallica had learned a pretty valuable lesson: don't treat your bandmates like sh*t.
