10 Musicians Who Left Major Bands

4. Peter Gabriel - Genesis

When Genesis started in the early 70's, their unique brand of rock music was pivotal in pioneering prog as the decade went on. Whether or not you the music grabbed you, Gabriel's stage presence was undeniable as he dressed up as everything from flowers to foxes. His antics caused massive headlines for the band and feelings of resentment amongst the band members.

As the band went from one prog masterpiece to another, they found that Gabriel was all the press would talk about whenever Genesis was brought into the conversation. With the release of the double record The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, even Gabriel himself was getting tired of compromising his styles with the rest of his bandmates.

Once the band were set to launch their tour to support Broadway, Gabriel quickly informed the band's manager that he would be leaving to launch a solo career after the run of dates were completed. While the shows remained fantastic, there was always the elephant in the room among the members whenever they hit the stage. Even though Gabriel and Genesis both found greater success as separate entities, Gabriel's departure marked the end of an era for the masters of prog rock.
