10 Musicians Who Left Major Bands

5. Joe Perry - Aerosmith

By the mid-70's, Aerosmith was being looked at as the next great American rock band. Not only did they have the Demon of Screamin in Steven Tyler, but Joe Perry's charisma gave the band a second frontman. However, the songwriting duo were at each other's throats by the time they hit the big time.

With the band constantly strung out on drugs, Perry started to get increasingly frustrated with Tyler's creative disagreements. On the other side of the spectrum, Tyler was not happy with how much time Perry was spending with his girlfriend at the time. As the band played one of their biggest shows in Cleveland, the scene erupted into a screaming match backstage which resulted in Perry quitting to form his own band.

As the band soldiered on with guitarist Jimmy Crespo, the drug habits of Tyler got so bad that fellow guitarist Brad Whitford jumped ship as well. After 2 years of abysmal album sales from both parties, Joe Perry sorted out his differences with Tyler. While not on top yet, Aerosmith's collaboration with Run DMC on a cover of "Walk This Way" led to the band roaring back to life. While Steven Tyler is a magnetic presence in Aerosmith, the true magic of the band only works when both Tyler and Perry are working together.
