10 Near Perfect New Wave Albums With One Bad Song

2. The Raw & The Cooked - Fine Young Cannibals (1989)

This was another group who rode the new wave for just as long as it was popular - before floundering under the pressure to adapt their sound. It's a shame, because Fine Young Cannibals' second album is an intriguing mixture of soul, Motown and pop-rock, all expertly rolled into one.

This record is front loaded with classics. She Drives Me Crazy features a beat/riff combination which is unrivalled. The drum machine sets the tempo for some pre-grunge guitar chords to punctuate the mood. Slowly the bass lays on a melody that compliments the synth, expertly.

Good Thing, only continues the dance-bop vibes - imbuing your moves with a touch of swing. I'm Not The Man I Used To Be, takes things down a tone, and as the title indicates, it's a somewhat more introspective and melancholic piece - but it has a soulful and rich vibe. The enjoyment only continues, until Don't Look Back, which isn't terrible, but it does leave you wishing it would wrap itself up fast. The FYC pull it back with the follow up track, however. It's another song, mourning over a lost relationship, but the dance beat doesn't leave you down in the dumps for too long.
