10 Near Perfect Punk Rock Albums

1. Animal Boy - Ramones (1986)

The ninth album from the original punk group, was panned when it was released. It had been a decade since their groundbreaking debut, and the years had been filled with a steady stream of albums, some better received than others.

Critics thought the band's sound had became too distant from their original style. But it was a somewhat spurious claim. The album certainly saw the group explore new styles, but after 10 years of thrashing guitars who can blame them for mixing things up? She Belongs to Me was a slow ballad, with underlying synth lines adding a suitable amount of '80s pop to the record.

On the other side of the tracks, there were plenty of call backs to their earlier sound. Joey Ramone delivered a gritty vocal performances on Somebody Put Something In My Drink, snarling his destain for anything other than a gin and tonic. Love Kills, was Dee Dee's heartfelt ode to Sid Vicious. Bonzo Goes to Bitburg, was one of the best tracks they had written in years. Joey's lyrics denounced the Reagan administration, and simultaneously widened the riff between him and Johnny, who was a staunch Republican.

As whole, it's not the greatest album the group ever realised but it does contain some of their greatest songs.
