10 Near Perfect Punk Rock Albums
7. Give 'Em Enough Rope - The Clash (1978)
The second album from the Clash was almost half the length of the genre defining, London Calling. This was before the group really started expanding their musical palate by incorporating different styles. But they were nevertheless progressing from their self-titled debut.
The Ramones had released the blueprint to punk in 1976; it informed the English scene on how to compose tracks. The Clash used the short-song format, delivering an album of concise, no-nonsense rebel anthems, with most coming in at under two minutes. For their second album, they fleshed things out. Songs were getting longer, they still sounded like classic punk rock, but you could hear the shift in tone.
This might not be the greatest album the Clash ever released, and after listening to London Calling you find yourself yearning for the ska and reggae influences. But if you're after some balls-to-the-wall British punk rock, then there's not many better places to turn then Give 'Em Enough Rope.
