6. Punk In Drublic - NOFX (1994)
NOFX struggled on for the better part of eight years before they had any kind of financial success. Even after the release of Punk In Drublic the group refused to sign to a major label. They stuck to their punk ethos while their contemporaries were all signing deals with 'the man'. They might not have achieved the same commercial success as the Offspring or Green Day, but these guys have always maintained the respect of their peers, critics and fans.
With this album they became the most successful independent group in the world. The fact this record went gold, with a minimal marketing budget, is damn impressive - particularly when the internet was as rudimentary as it was back then.
Vocalist, Fat Mike, laced humour and realism into his lyrics in a uniquely charming way. On tracks like My Heart Is Yearning, Mike sings in mariachi style, while crudely recounting how a girl he loved gave him an STI. Perfect Government, questions all the nonsensical aspects of society, from racism to institutionalised corruption.
Although all the fast paced thrashing might get tiresome after a while, Fat Mike's lyrics are humorous enough to keep you engaged throughout the forty minute run time.
