10 New Bands That Prove Rock Isn't Dead
6. Sunlight's Bane
There aren't many extreme genres not covered in Sunlight's Bane debut album. Black metal, crust punk, grindcore, hardcore, it's all here in this mixing cauldron of darkness and depravity.
Pushing the boundaries of horror, anger and misery in their art, Sunlight's Bane are very reminiscent of Britain's extreme veterans Anaal Nathrakh minus the electronics. The mishmash of genres in TBVLATEWB comes from each member's previous band outings which saw members playing metalcore, black metal and deathcore.
Vocalist Nick Holland grew particularly tired of metalcore's lack of legitimacy, proclaiming "I felt no connection to sort of the crowd and what the band was going for. It was very by-the-numbers and faked. There was a formula for what you had to do and if you followed that, just like a mathematic formula, there would be success."
TBVLATEWB is easily one of the most hate-fuelled albums of the past 12 months. Holland's vocal delivery is terrifying and the visceral wall of noise could tear through anything brave enough to get in its way. Black metal has recently had a polishing, with Deafheaven, Myrkur and Oathbreaker popularising a post-metal-inspired black metal, this is anything but.
