10 Non Rock Albums That Rock Music Fans Love
7. Hounds of Love - Kate Bush
Throughout most of her career, Kate Bush always remained slightly on the fringes of rock and roll. Even with the push from Pink Floyd's David Gilmour in the very beginning of her career, her musical vision almost seemed to defy genre altogether, bringing in different musical pieces and somehow making them fit in a pop realm. Though The Dreaming may have been the moment when Kate started to express herself in the studio, Hounds of Love is what happens when progressive rock goes pop.
After spending her time honing her songcraft on the past two records, songs like Running Up That Hill and Cloudbusting are a lot more fully formed here, creating entire worlds in your mind that paved the way for more art rock like Bjork in the following years. In addition to the actual songs though, Kate seems to be trying out different places in her own voice here as well, sounding like some sort of spiritual being in some spots of the record before the tone turns into something horrifying just a few songs later.
As far as the prog enthusiasts are concerned though, the back half of the record is where everything really shines, having the title The Ninth Wave and telling a story of a woman stranded out at sea and having little to no hope for survival. Even if this is still technically a pop album in name, Kate Bush was never one for titles, and was always going to make songs on her own terms.
