10 Often Forgotten Nu Metal Bands

4. Taproot

Taproot were somewhat of an anomaly when they first arrived on the scene. Despite the heaviness of the music, vocalist Stephen Richards favoured a more melodic, sung vocal style on a lot of their tracks.

It was different, but fans loved it, with single "Poem" being the fifth most played rock track in 2002. Taproot were more emo in their lyrical content than other bands, years before the whole "emo movement" was a thing.

Things could have been bigger for them, though, after they were tipped to sign a contract on Interscope alongside the behemoth that was Limp Bizkit. Instead, they waited it out and negotiated a contract with Atlantic instead, which led to the now infamous, expletive-ridden voicemail from Fred Durst to Richards' answering machine.

Would Taproot have been bigger on Interscope than the moderate success they received elsewhere? It's hard to say, but it hasn't stopped them putting records out.

As of 2018, Taproot were in the studio recording their seventh album. No album yet, but the band haven't announced their retirement either...
