10 Overrated Hard Rock Albums Of The '90s
9. Kid Rock - Devil Without A Cause (1998)
"Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy, Shake the boogie said up jump the boogie"
These are the lyrics a fully-grown redneck, who probably weighed 8 stone soaking wet, dressed in a shiny shell suit sang, as part of a 1+ hour long, diamond-selling rap metal record that also featured Eminem. Nothing is unobtainable. All dreams are possible.
By the time of Kid Rock's fourth studio album, we already had self-titled efforts from Korn, Coal Chamber, 'Around the Fur' by Deftones, and 'Three Dollar Bill, Y'all' by Limp Bizkit. In fact, 'Devil Without a Cause' came out the same day as Korn's 5x platinum-selling album 'Follow the Leader', and yet features in Robert Dimery's seminal '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die' book ahead of all mentioned artists bar Korn, as well as Static-X, Papa Roach, Soulfly, Mudvayne, Fear Factory, and a slew of non-nu metal brilliance.
The song "Cowboy" is credited as being the genesis of the country rap genre, from which, we now have Colt Ford, that Nelly/Tim McGraw collaboration, and Jawga Boyz. That alongside the insipid, non-sensical lyrics (see "Bawitidaba" and "like an egg yolk, I ain't no joke" from the title track) means this whole album should be considered a war crime.
