10 Overrated Rock Music Acts Of The 2010s
6. James Bay
The hype around James Bay's first few singles was sorely overstated. Sure, Hold Back The River had its virtues, the guitar hook was memorable, the song structure was well crafted, and the chorus lent itself to a good singalong, but Bay coasted off its popularity. The single appeared on the album Chaos And The Calm, but it was a record littered with songs of mixed notability. Mostly, it was full of half baked concepts that felt like they only existed to justify the release of the single.
James Bay seems to be a casualty of the music industries need to churn out content as quickly as possible. Up until 2013, Bay was still performing pubs and clubs but was signed to a major label after a video of him playing went viral. Rather than the label getting him to develop his material, they pushed him into the limelight in record time.
This guy obviously has talent but his insanely quick rise to international recognition seems to have been based on one standout song (and a decent hat/hair combo) rather than an ability to consistently create good music.
