Twenty One Pilots popularity is undeniable. Stressed Out has an insane 2.4 billion views on YouTube, it's a catchy tune but the allure of these guys isn't matched by their back catalogue.
They can certainly be commended for their ability to blend genres, you could call these guys alternative hip hop, punk rap, rap rock, or even, soft nu metal. In many ways it's refreshing to hear a group defy convention and it doesn't seem like these guys allow themselves to be confined, but their music ends up leaning on the pop side of things.
These guys might be slightly more bearable if they didn't lay the sulky mellow drama on so heavily, even their more upbeat numbers are laced with a general sense of doom and gloom.
This kind of music became huge in the 2010s, large electronic sounds, so overly produced that any hint of the original instrument is swallowed entirely. If Linkin Park is the god father of this sound and Imagine Dragons is the flamboyant annoying brother, then Twenty One Pilots are the morose cousin.
