10 Overrated Rock Music Albums Of The 2010s

3. LCD Soundsystem - American Dream

You’ve just got to know when to quit.

In 2011, LCD Soundsystem ended on a triumphant high. Their third record, This is Happening, was the highlight of a great career; a victory lap of a goodbye tour followed, captured on a 2014 live album. Then, three years after that, James Murphy was back in the saddle.

Fans were happy to see them back, of course, but American Dream was a bit of a limp return for LCD Soundsystem. The main problem? All the urgency seems to have been sucked out of the band’s sound. From opener Oh Baby, the old dance-punk act shuffles along, with every song stretched way past its breaking point. That’s fine when you’re dancing in a vibing venue, but there’s not a lot here to make you move your feet.

The killer blow: this album is so much longer than it needs to be.

There are only ten tracks, but all bar one exceeds five minutes, and hardly any of them need to. Murphy also dips into some of his more annoying tricks, like the shriek-heavy Call the Police. It was a return everyone wanted, but really shouldn’t have. You don’t get many chances for a perfect ending.
