10 Perfect 1990s Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

6. The Colour and the Shape - Foo Fighters

No one would blame Dave Grohl if he decided to never play a note of music again after 1994. Since Nirvana's end threw everyone for a loop, going back to the drawing board by playing music may have felt like tearing open an old wound. When he finally got down to business though, Foo Fighters managed to really hit their stride on The Colour and the Shape.

With the help of Pixies producer Gil Norton, Grohl produced what could be considered the first true post grunge album, with the same loud guitars but a slightly more optimistic attitude than what his former band had been used to making. Along with an incredible sense of melody, these are the kind of slice of life songs that are a lot more natural coming from Grohl, from the singalong chorus of Everlong to talking about the average ordinary guy on My Hero.

Even when he's writing songs particularly about sounding sad, they either hit with the force of a battering ram like on Monkey Wrench or they manage to have a Beatle-esque tinge to them on songs like Walking After You. Before the Colour and the Shape, it wasn't clear that the Foo Fighters were anything more than a fluke. Once we got an earful of these tunes, we were going to be hearing about them for a looong time.
