10 Perfect Albums Ruined By One Song

8. Back to School - Deftones

Of all the more whiny records to come out of the nu metal genre, there's still something special coming off of Deftones' White Pony. After getting strung out on drugs during the album's production, you can really feel a caustic presence on this record, along with some of the best riffs that the band would ever create at the same time. Sounds like the makings of a perfect record...until the record label had to get involved.

As fate would have it, Deftones had planned to make this record with as little fat as possible, only for Chino Moreno to be told that there wasn't really a single on the record. When looking back through the album, one of their advisors said that the chorus of Pink Maggit would make a great hit song, and told him to write another song in that vein. Being more than a little bit pissed about the whole thing, Chino decided to write Back to School with the same chorus as a way to show him how easy it was to write a stupid pop song.

And by all accounts...it worked. Instead of reacting in disgust like he'd hoped, Chino was horrified when the label rushed this to radio and included it as the first track on most editions of White Pony. The kicker: it wasn't even the best single, with Change beginning to take off soon afterward. Without even knowing it, the band had compromised almost out of spite.
