10 Perfect Albums That Have Awful Production

5. Angles - The Strokes

Not every great album has to have the best backstory to be a hit. If Fleetwood Mac's Rumours is any indication, the best albums ever made can sometimes be a nightmare to get off the ground. The band comes first before anything though, and Angles may have been the closest that the Strokes have come to buckling under the pressure.

When the band were beginning to run through the tracks, the vision that Julian Casablancas had was a lot more standoffish, with every band member chipping in their pieces of music on their own and bringing them into the songs by themselves. While this odd construction of recording may have been worthwhile at the time, almost every member of the band has been vocal about this being a horrible album to make, with Nick Valensi saying that he wouldn't want to make another record with thegroup if they recorded with this same format. For all of the headaches in the studio though, Angles does a great job at pushing the band's style forward, shaking off the sounds of First Impressions of Earth and getting a lot more soulful on tracks like Under Cover of Darkness.

Time hasn't necessarily been kind to this album either, with The New Abnormal practically doing everything that Angles was trying to do and improving on it, twisting different genres together and finding a way to connect with that raw side of the band they had back on Is This It. The Strokes might be on more level ground these days, but there was also a good chance that not all of them were going to be walking out of this album in one piece back in the day either.
