10 Perfect Beatles Songs From Their Solo Careers
1. Back Seat of My Car - Paul McCartney
When Paul eventually got his solo career underway, he went out with something to prove. Since he was being called the villain of the Beatles' story for his dictating nature in the studio, he needed to make something to prove to himself that he could still deliver without the help of his friends. And with the help of Linda, RAM was the homespun album that they needed with a showstopping closer to end things off.
While most of RAM was recorded in an upscale studio in New York, there's a certain authenticity here that you don't really find on the rest of the Beatles' records. Being free to do whatever he wants, this piano ballad feels like a mix of what Paul had done on Oh Darling off of Abbey Road with the mindset of She's Leaving Home. Framing himself as a rough and tumble kid looking to run away from his dead end life with his girl, Macca pretty much invented the ethos for Bruce Springsteen's entire career without even trying with this song.
Considering the kind of granny music that John was dogging McCartney for in the early days, there's absolutely no fluff to be found on this thing, with Paul letting loose about leaving the past behind for someplace better. He may not know what's going to be coming on the horizon, but he doesn't really need to. Just like John had Yoko, Paul will be alright as long as he has Linda by his side.
