10 Perfect Beatles Songs From Their Solo Careers
4. Band on the Run - Paul McCartney
Towards the end of the Fab's tenure, they never stopped trying to experiment with what they could do with rock and roll. As the last side of Abbey Road will tell you, these guys could still play their asses off, and the last 20 minutes of the album form a medley that shows every member at the peak of their powers. If it worked so well the first time though, you wouldn't fault Paul for wanting a medley of his own with Wings.
Though the original medley idea Paul had on Red Rose Speedway was a bit spotty, Band on the Run is where everything started to come together, taking three completely different sonic ideas and making them work better combined than apart. Much like John had done back in the days of Happiness is a Warm Gun, this entire song feels like a journey, from Paul and the gang being trapped in prison to eventually bursting through at the end and fading away into the sunset.
This was also around the time when Paul started to feel a little bit more nostalgic about his Fab days, even using a few effects that John would have used a lot on his songs. Even though the members were miles apart at this time, this could have been the kind of cinematic song that brought all of them together. After the dust had settled, these guys were still musical brothers, and this could have been the beginning of a Beatles concept album about a band on the run.
