10 Perfect Britpop Albums Of The '90s

6. Love is the Law - The Seahorses

Correction: Album is Do It Yourself; NOT Love is the Law

The ending of the Stone Roses truly felt like the end of an era for a certain portion of the Britpop empire. Suddenly, one of the bands that helped start it all was now a thing of the past, and the rest of the scene was going to look especially different in their absence. That didn't mean that John Squire decided to hang up his guitar though. With the Seahorses, he was just getting started.

Compared to the rest of the Britpop catalogue, this is the one album that seems to be designed for guitar nerds, with some of the most infectious riffs to ever come out of the scene. Whereas most bands at the time were trying to runaway from the flashy playing and choosing to write songs from the heart, Squire threw caution to the wind and made some of the greatest solos of his generation, including the track Love is the Law which lets him grandstand for the last half of the tune.

That's not to discount the rest of the band either, and Chris Helme does have a hell of a presence behind the mic, even when stripping it down to just an acoustic on a song like Hello. There's probably nothing that will ever match up to the Roses, but this album is a nice testament as to how far we'd come since the early days of Britpop.
