10 Perfect Britpop Albums Of The '90s

5. Different Class - Pulp

From its inception, Britpop was supposed to be a movement for the everyman. Sure, there may have been dreams of being rock stars and selling millions of records, but you never forgot that these were working class lads that were detailing the lives they were living every single day. And in Jarvis Cocker's case, things ended up getting more than a little bit eclectic.

Instead of the normal Beatles and Stones comparisons that you'd get from most Britpop, Cocker felt more like a David Bowie type figure, making the most of every minute he was onstage and having just the right type of androgyny to make things work. Whether it's him being hopelessly romantic on a song like Something Changed or trying to coerce your parents on Pencil Skirt, you believe every single word he says about what escapades he's going to get into in between these songs.

Also, if you're going for a signature song to define the Britpop movement, Common People might be it, taking this one little tale about a woman with a thirst for knowledge and learning about the people of England before eventually turning into this mammoth experience where everything sounds like it's on the verge of falling apart. Considering how Britpop ended up bottoming out towards the end of the decade, it's hard not to look at that song alone as a culmination of the entire scene. Too big to discount...but also too ramshackle to last.
