10 Perfect Britpop Albums Of The '90s
4. The La's - The La's
Part of the beauty behind these rock scenes is about being in the right place at the right time. Though Britpop may have gotten its first wave in the mid '90s, it wasn't until grunge really fell that it started to actually come into its own. As for its true origins though, the La's started their career almost 5 years too early.
Being more in line with bands like the Cranberries and The Cardigans from around the same time, Lee Mavers' songwriting on the La's only album holds the template for everything that Britpop would need for the future. Having a knack for classic melodies and a unapologetic accent to wrap the whole thing together with, Mavers turned the sound of pop into magic again, with a song like There She Goes being the catchiest ode to heroin addiction ever made.
When it comes to the deep cuts though, you can hear traces of everyone from Pulp to Suede to Oasis in every single one of these tunes. And it seems that Noel Gallagher would agree, calling it one of his favorite albums and saying that it was a primary influence when he first started to get the ball rolling as a songwriter. It might not be a Britpop album from skin to core, but without the La's debut, the entire late '90s Britpop scene would have looked completely different.
