10 Perfect Compilation Albums In Rock Music History

5. Singles - Soundtrack

When you think of the all time classic movies of the '90s, Singles isn't really up there with Shawshank Redemption or anything. While there was some buzz around Cameron Crowe's latest movie at the time, it almost feels like a placeholder film before he would get to films like Jerry Maguire a bit later down the line. Crowe started his career in the world of rock and roll though, and he had his finger on the pulse of alternative rock with this soundtrack.

Taken on its own, the soundtrack to Singles may be one of the greatest grunge albums of all time, only without Nirvana on the track listing. Aside from Kurt Cobain's absence, almost everything about this album captures the feel of what it was like being in Seattle in the early '90s, where bands were taking a much more organic approach to rock and roll. Grunge was never a one note genre though, and we get a lot more variety on here, from the punk sounds of Mudhoney's Overblown to the all out rock and roll of Pearl Jam's State of Love and Trust and the metal crunch of Alice in Chains' "Would?."

There are definitely some changes of pace like the inclusion of Jimi Hendrix and The Lovemongers in the track listing, but that just serves the premise of the alternative scene just as well. The mindset behind this music was always "anything goes," and this captures that kind of laid back attitude under one roof.
