10 Perfect Compilation Albums In Rock Music History

2. Incesticide - Nirvana

If all you listened to of Nirvana was Nevermind, there's a lot more to dissect in their back catalog. As much as Kurt Cobain may have loved songs like Smells Like Teen Spirit going into recording, he ended up despising the kind of music he made, thinking that the end result was a lot more slick than he would have wanted it. Though In Utero was the more warts-and-all musical statement of Nirvana's career, Incesticide served as a nice gateway to that kind of sound.

Bringing out what Kurt Cobain called the "new wave" side of the band, most of the songs on here are a collection of their art rock stylings, more in line with what you would have heard off of Bleach. In fact, this might be a better look at what Nirvana might have sounded like if they had never left Sub Pop Records, taking the raw sounds of punk and new wave and warping them into rock and roll. Though there are some beloved singles on here like Sliver, their renditions of acts like Devo and the Vaselines are a good indication of what direction Kurt really wanted to go in, keeping the hooks but with a more ramshackle production style.

The same sounds of Bleach are still present here though, and you get to hear some meaty chunks of metal and art rock in the mix as well, like the freakout happening during the tail end of the song Aneurysm or when they bring some crunch to songs like Stain and Dive. Even though he's the main songwriter of every Nirvana song, this might be the most "Kurt Cobain" album that Nirvana ever put out.
