10 Perfect Glam Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
6. Queen - Queen
Just the idea of putting Queen into a specific genre feels wrong, doesn't it? Ever since the early days of the band, Freddie Mercury's vision for the group was always something a lot broader than what every other band may have been doing at the time. When they started though, they were just a standard glam rock band with songs that hit like a ton of bricks.
For a debut album, this is one of the most layered accomplishments for a young band, having mountains of guitar and vocal overdubs sprinkled into the mix on tracks like Keep Yourself Alive and Liar. From day one, the Queen sound was already firmly in place, with a slight bit of camp seeping in through the cracks every now and again, like when Roger Taylor takes the mic on Modern Times Rock and Roll and the vocals on the chorus of Jesus.
Above all else, this is by far the most confident glam band that we had seen at this point, with Freddie being every bit the rock star that he was destined to be and even verging into some prog rock territory with the long journeys on songs like Great King Rat. As much potential as that they had at this point, this is a nice look at what the baby version of Queen looked like. A band with loads of ideas that were destined to become giants in just a few years.
