10 Perfect Grunge Rock Albums Of The 90s

1. In Utero - Nirvana

Any list of the best grunge albums ever made not including Nirvana would probably be considered sacrilege. Since these were the guys who pretty much took over the mainstream and made it okay for the rest of Seattle to get on MTV, they deserve at least some sort of passing mention. Though Nevermind was the litmus test for how grunge could take over the airwaves, In Utero tested the limit of just how much you could do once you had their attention.

Looking to go in the exact opposite direction as their last record, Kurt Cobain found a confidante in Steve Albini, who made this entire record sound as disheveled as possible. While songs like Heart Shaped Box and Dumb serve as a decent second chapter into Nirvana's legacy, the main theme of this album is the abrasive parts, where Kurt goes off the rails trying to make the art rock record that he always wanted to make.

It may have been able to get more people interested in art rock, but the gamble didn't pay off in the long run. Just a few months after this record hit shelves, Kurt was found dead in his home, having committed suicide a few days prior and leading many people to believe this album was his goodbye. Either way, this is one of the few albums in grunge history where every track is needed to sum up the bigger picture of what Nirvana were about.
