10 Perfect Hard Rock & Metal Albums That Bands HATE
1. Nevermind - Nirvana
It's tough to bestow this position to by far the most influential album on this list. Off the strength of Smells Like Teen Spirit alone, Nevermind would have been a landmark moment for rock and roll, putting the last nail in the coffin lid of the '80s and announcing the '90s revolution with a sense of disillusioned irony. So how the hell is something this lively considered a bit soulless by its songwriter?
During the actual production of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain was actually extremely complimentary of what they were doing, with songs that fit somewhere between pop and hard rock across the board.
When it came time to mix the thing though, Kurt decided on Andy Wallace specifically because of his work with bands like Slayer. Thinking it would give the record a more grizzly feel, Cobain was horrified when the candified mix of the record became the go to soundtrack to millions of fans across the world.
Never wanting that much fame and attention that quickly, Kurt would do everything he could to talk down the record in interviews, even going so far as to compare Nevermind to the sounds of Motley Crue rather than the punk rock it was inspired by.
While you have to wonder how much of that hate came from its blockbuster reception, you could tell that Cobain wanted to push for something a lot more grizzly when it came time to make In Utero a few years later.
