10 Perfect Indie Albums Of The 1990s
9. I Should Coco - Supergrass
The whole idea behind indie music started to feel like an oxymoron by the time the mid '90s were upon us. Since one of the biggest labels gaining attraction was the upstart Sub Pop, the rest of the world spent most of their time trying to catch up with the competition. On the other side of the pond though, the indies were where you would find all of the best Britpop had to offer.
While Supergrass don't tend to get brought up as much as the Oasis's of the world, I Should Coco is a mandatory listen for anyone even slightly interested in what the mid '90s sounded like. This album is like the band heard what the grunge scene was doing and decided to take the more tuneful approach, with songs that were as much informed by punk rock as they were from pop music.
I mean, where else were you going to find something raunchy like Caught By the Fuzz on the same record that had the bubblegum pop of Alright just a few tracks later. If anything, these guys were way ahead of their time in that respect. Once America got a load of this, we started to see the germs of every great pop punk band taking shape. You can call it good timing, but that kind of pivot doesn't happen by accident.
