10 Perfect Music Albums That Defined The 90s

1. Nirvana: Nevermind (1991)

Is there a more satisfying opening to an album than Dave Grohl's drum count on Smells Like Teen Spirit? No, would be the correct responce. One can't mention '90s music, in any capacity, without referencing grunge, and more specifically, Nirvana.

The start of the '90s saw the last true innovation of modern rock 'n' roll. Sure, Britpop was huge for a while, but it was a recycling of '60s sounds, and borrowed ideas from the '80s. It's true, you could pinpoint Nirvana's origins: they channeled the aggression of punk acts like Black Flag; the ominous doom and gloom of Black Sabbath; and the song structuring techniques of the Pixies. But the integration of these influences sounded like nothing else.

Cobain's vocal outcries of impassioned pain, transcended the record above anything that had come before. That's not to mention the brilliance of Dave Grohl's power house drum technique, and Krist Novoselic relentless, rumbling bass lines. Grunge never reached the same levels of intensity after Nevermind. It was the high water mark for the genre. There have been great rock albums since this, but it's hard to list any that surpass it.
