10 Perfect Rap Rock Albums With No Bad Songs

6. Pixel Bath - Jean Dawson (2020)

Are we finally entering into a world of post-genre music? Jean Dawson is another up and comer, bringing together a multitude of elements, leaving music critics stumped as to how to categories him.

His debut feels like a new wave record, siphoned through an alternative hip hop filter. It's far removed from the type of rock/hip hop blending we've been used to in the past. Dawson seems to have been brought up on pop punk and indie music, but there's also many elements of grunge to his sound. He uses this as a foundation, interlacing traces of lo fi trap and alt hip hop. The result, is an album of chilled out songs, that know how to pack a punch when they need to.

Shiner, combines a trap approach to rap, but counter balances it with ambient synth melodies and reverb-heavy guitars. Bruiseboy, flows like a 2000s indie tune, but effortlessly drifts into a more hip hop inspired chorus. The songs on this album flit back-and-forth between genres with such fluidity, that at no point does it feel jarring.

This is an incredibly focused debut record, but if his latest release with Mac Demarco, is anything to go by, Dawson is only just starting to explore his potential.
