10 Perfect Rap Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
4. King Of Rock - Run-D.M.C (1985)
Break beats, '80s metal guitar and the kings of hip hop - what else could you ask for? One of the more prominent sounds of the '80s was Run-D.M.C. They became pivotal in converting a primarily rock based MTV audience into rap fans. Their 1984 track, Rock Box, was the first rap track to be played on the music station, but although several other hip hop and rap artists enjoyed a degree of airplay, MTV was slow to open its doors to the genre.
King Of Rock, made a statement before people even heard the tracks. Although, Run-D.M.C. were popular, they still divided opinion: hardcore rap fans gave them s**t for being too soft; and some rock fans found the bastardisation of guitar music a heresy. This didn't stop the group pushing forward, however.
Although Raising Hell, has been celebrated as the groups most successful and influential record of their career, King Of Rock was the album that saw them embrace the rock/rap fusion to a larger degree. Tracks like, Can You Rock It, incorporated a repeated guitar hook that served to underpin the break beats and sample melodies. With the classical call and responce approach to spitting lines, the group made a number of claims about their ability to rock just as hard as your average band. And, they didn't disappoint.
