10 Perfect Rap Rock Albums With No Bad Songs
3. Spare Ribs - Sleaford Mods (2021)
In the words of the Mods themselves this is “electronic munt minimalist punk-hop rants for the working class.” Post punk rap never sounded so British. Andrew Fearn produces lo fi, drooling backing music, for Jason Williamson to sarcastically berate Tories, toffs and wannabe gangstas.
Combing spoken word, rap and half arsed singing, Williamson's thick Midlands accent serves as the voice of the disenfranchised. He professes his dissatisfaction with Brexit Britain, austerity and all the nonsense that swirls around in a Tory run country.
Elocution, contains a bouncy jovial beat, for Williamson to exhibit his best posh voice. Sarcastically professing his desire to "be a !*$% just like you" as he mocks the more snooty members of the upper classes. Out there, hears Williamson despair at the anti-foreigner sentiment that seemed to fuel the Brexit debate. Mork n Mindy, is soaked in the smell of damp walls, cheap biscuits and run down council estates. It features fellow post punk, Billy Nomates, who adds several dispiriting verses about impoverished Britain.
Despite the bleak subject matter, there's a dark humour underpinning the album. For the most part, the beats bounce just enough to give you an urge to dance, if not in a somewhat half arsed way. And, you can't help but smile at the fun Williamson is having with his word play.
