2. The Real Thing - Faith No More (1989)

Thanks to a new lead singer, Mike Patton, Faith No More's third album brought the band a huge amount of success. Hailed as a definitive funk metal album, the band combined grooved out bass lines with face melting guitar. But, it was Patton's distinct vocals that elevated this record above many of its contemporaries. The way he merged is falsetto voice with his rap abilities was nothing short of remarkable.

The opening track is almost a straight hair metal song. But, then the band blasts you with Epic - a metal rap track that jumps around, more often then Patton in the music video. Falling to Pieces, is another notable banger. Although bassist, Billy Gould, famously hated it, it contains one of his funkier bass lines on the record. The deluxe version of the album also includes a cover of Black Sabbath's War Pigs, which hears, Patton exhibit a suitable amount of squealing.

After this record, these guys became staunch competitors with their former touring mates, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Although the Chilis hadn't had a major breakthrough record at this point, they were the reining kings of punk-funk rap in the underground. When, Mike Patton joined Faith No More, however, he started drawing attention for his distinct rapping techniques and boisterous dance moves. Needless to say, Anthony Kiedis felt somewhat threatened...
