10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The 2000s
7. Origin of Symmetry - Muse
If you were judging Muse purely off of their debut release Showbiz, chances are we'd probably not be talking about them too much these days. Sure, they were pretty obvious Radiohead clones and had a few decent tunes behind them, but there wasn't much differentiating them from the dozens of others riding Jonny Greenwood's coattails. Origin of Symmetry proved something that no other band could though. These guys had chops and weren't afraid to use them.
Although the otherworldly sounds of their debut haven't gone anywhere, Matthew Bellamy really came into his own as a writer on this one, crafting songs that were equally chaotic and melodic at the same time. From the opening track New Born you know exactly what you're going to get, bringing together classical style melodies with some of the crunchiest rock guitars to come out of the non-nu metal variety of rock and roll.
And they just keep topping themselves all across this record, going from the freakout of Hyper Music and the smooth acoustics on Screenager to even making a showtune sound like it's being played from Mars on Feeling Good. As much as the Radiohead influence may have still been there, you weren't going to mistake a Muse tune for anyone else from this moment forward.
