10 Perfect Rock Frontmen Of The 90s
3. Billie Joe Armstrong - Green Day
When grunge started to get a little too real after Kurt Cobain's death, people didn't know where to turn. In one tragic incident, all of the downtrodden lyrics of the past few years got shockingly real, and the entire scene seemed to cave in with him. You would need something more than just another rock band to help us get over that, and we got something delightfully bratty once Green Day reached the top of the charts.
While pretty much every one of the band members had their own unique schtick wherever they went, Billie Joe Armstrong was always the heart and soul of the band. Fitting somewhere between the bratty kid down the street and the angry young punk of Gilman Street, every one of the band's songs felt like a little slice of life, even if it meant talking about some dark subjects on stuff like Geek Stink Breath and Basket Case.
That paled in comparison to when you saw them up close, with Woodstock 94 going down in legend with an insane mudfight that Armstrong started with the crowd. Just looking at the videos that Green Day made back in the day is the stuff out of a fever dream, almost like they were making a bid at getting their own cartoon show. And if this is the kind of shenanigans that the band gets up to, it's not like that cartoon wouldn't have an audience either.
