Greta Van Fleet appeared on the rock 'n' roll scene in 2017 as if transported from the past, shimmering in on a zephyr of smooth sonic energy. Hailed as the next Zeppelin, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith... you name it, the foursome have understandably failed to live up to the expectations set by such comparisons. But that doesn't mean they haven't put in a good shift and given us some serious tracks to remember.

While the Greta Van Fleet hype train may have rapidly overtaken the young band's abilities, their debut EP Black Smoke Rising offered four refined rock tracks that transported us straight back to the height of classic rock in the 20th century. And the musical simplicity of the titular track fits the genre perfectly, marrying straight-up rock beats and riffs with a straightforward structure and intentionally pitchy Zeppelin-esque vocals that make it feel like it has been around for ever -- in the best possible way.

Now, if someone can only call them back down from the gimmicky, OTT outfits and antics, and take them out the pockets of the money-grubbing record companies and their producers, we might yet see another big rock hit of its like.
