10 Perfect Rock Songs That Musicians Hate
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
There's a difference between wanting to be famous and wanting to be successful. As much as it feels like they go hand in hand in the music business, no one really wants all the baggage that comes with being a rich rock star all the time. And no one knew that sentiment better than Kurt Cobain after Smells Like Teen Spirit blew up.
Granted, it's not like Kurt hated the song from the start. When the band were tracking Nevermind in the studio, Kurt was actually fairly proud of the lyrics and thought that he hit on something a lot more guttural than what he had before. Then a funny thing started to happen once the song started to really take off. As much as this song spoke to the disenfranchised kids Cobain had intended it to, it also managed to rope in the cool kids that Kurt seemed to be rallying against.
The minute that the song blew up on MTV, Kurt felt like he didn't even have ownership of the song anymore, and did whatever he could to not play the song in concert. When speaking about the song later, Kurt would say that the thought of the song makes him want to give up on his gig and throw his guitar to the ground. You can't really blame him though. When you touch the culture right on its wound like this, there's going to be some collateral pain.
