10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Inspired From Another Band
5. Life On Mars - David Bowie
Since the early days of his career, almost every one of Bowie's songs feels like an extension of himself, with some of the most inventive ideas that the rock world had ever seen up until that point. Even when he decided to pull from another song though, there was a little bit of a biting tone to it.
Long before Bowie even got his gig as the resident art rocker of England, he was originally a budding songwriter looking to write a hit, which he thought came his way when he penned the song Even a Fool Learns to Love. Though the record company didn't take to his style, Bowie was dejected when he heard the backing track of the song he was given on the radio, having been adopted by Frank Sinatra and turned into the colossal smash My Way.
Almost out of spite, Bowie went for something a lot more bombastic when it came time to revisit his roots on Hunky Dory. Along with the amazing vocal performance, the song Life on Mars starts out as a cheeky lift of My Way, going so far as to use the same opening piano figure before going into a completely different direction. As if to make nice though, Bowie did give somewhat of an explanation in the liner notes with a thank you note to Sinatra underneath the song title.
