10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Never Released As Singles
8. Anthem Part Two - Blink 182
When Blink 182 were putting the finishing touches on Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, they were a far different band than when they started. Though Enema of the State had done phenomenal numbers on the charts, the lovable brat songs don't really guarantee that you'll be around forever. As the next record opened up though, Blink was going to start moving into some more serious territory.
While the first version of Anthem capped off Enema by talking about parents always bringing you down, the sequel is the next logical piece of that puzzle. Going from parents to the entire generation before, Tom DeLonge is a lot more concerned this time around, looking at the world around him and seeing how everything is crumbling to dust with the people in power. The beauty of the song comes from how symbolic it is though, having the same Blink happy go lucky sounds while also being a lot more heartfelt.
Before songs like First Date and The Rock Show were written, Blink had originally envisioned this being a lot more aggro experience influenced by the post hardcore scene, and this feels like the biggest example of what that kind of record could have looked like. Though Green Day would take a lot of credit for their political commentary on American Idiot, Blink actually managed to cast the first stone on this song.
