10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were Never Released As Singles
7. So Sad About Us - The Who
Before the days of Tommy, The Who were never meant to be the most original of bands. Though they managed to blow out their fans' eardrums every time they played, most of their debut album was about mining the same type of R&B songs that the rest of their peers were doing, selling them back to the States as part of the British Invasion. Pete Townshend never really had much use for this scene for too long though, and A Quick One is where things start getting a little more adventurous.
While this also is known to have the first epic story song the Who would create with the title track, they were also ambitious for letting the rest of the band members write songs for the first time, with varying degrees of success. Townshend's songs did end up becoming some of the most celebrated on the record, with So Sad About Us being the closest to pure pop as they would ever get.
Compared to the raw aggression on the first record, this is a tried and true breakup song, with a melody that sounded like it could have come off of the early moptop days of the Beatles. Although it's easy to see why a song like this still lives in the shadow of something like Baba O Riley, Pete Townshend may have inadvertently started the genre of power pop years before it was even a thing.
