10 Perfect Singles By Terrible Rock Bands

5. Mötley Crüe: Kickstart My Heart (1989)

If you want an idea of how shameless, hedonistic narcism was in the '80s, then the Crüe are the band to sum it up best. These guys took the classic image of a rock star, dialled things up to eleven and then smothered everything in cocaine. The hair got bigger, the pants got tighter, the riffs got fatter and the lyrics became more outrageous. They made rock a parody of itself.

They might have been the biggest thing on the Sunset Strip for a decade, but all you need to do is listen to anything they released post 1990, to realise these guys never knew how to roll with the times. Vince Neil's current insistence to squeeze into his '80s clobber, and prance around on stage with 10% of enthusiasm of his younger self, gives you pretty good indication he's only in it for the money now.

Having said all that, you can tell yourself you only listen to the Crüe ironically, but that wouldn't be honest. For all the obnoxious bravado and male showboating, there's something about hair-metal that lights a fire under your ass, and makes you consider buying a Harley.
