10 Perfect Singles By Terrible Rock Bands
2. Nickelback: Animals (2005)
The popular rock scene in the 2000s was an interesting place. The indie thing was going strong in the UK, and garage rock was making a comeback in the States. There was a lot to enjoy. But the stuff that seemed to get the majority of air time also seemed to be the most vapid. Alterntive rock struggled to find a place outside of pop-punk, and the aforementioned sub genres. 'Post-grunge' was sometimes used to describe the kind of alternative pop-rock that seemed to be making waves.
The Foo Fighters were an example of one of the more enjoyable bands roped into that category, but on the other end of the spectrum you had Nickelback. It's almost a cliché to hate on Nickelback these days, but we can all agree, Chad Kroeger is one obnoxious guy. His lyrics might be nonsensical, contradictory or just plain terrible, but he does have a knack for making them catchy as hell.
This group has a monopoly on inexplicably popular songs, that simultaneously receive a near universal degree of hate. Those same things we hate about Nickelback are also the things that make them great to listen to. In years to come music scholars will debate at length, exactly what the Nickelback phenomena was, but for now, we can content ourselves indulging in the odd song by them, while simultaneously agreeing they were s**t.
