10 Perfect Songs From Terrible Bands

7. Push - Matchbox Twenty

In hindsight, there probably isn't one genre that was more derivative than post grunge. Even though the glory days of Nirvana and Pearl Jam made it seem like the revolution might be succeeding, the backwash sounds of bands like Staind and Creed left us with some of the most underwhelming rock music ever created, either talking about their scar collection or (in Creed's case) their rocking love for Jesus. If rockers didn't have much to love from that, Matchbox Twenty was practically Dawson's Creek grunge.

When you actually look past some of the lightweight riffs that were coming out of songs like Real World, Push is one of the few amazing songs that the band would ever put out, going past their mammoth single 3 AM and actually sounding like something that could have come off of a record by Live. Keeping it to a fairly standard rock setup, Rob Thomas' tale about a guy feeling left out to dry by society fits right into the normal loner anthems of the grunge movement, practically telling the same story of Glycerine by Bush or Creep by Radiohead.

While this is not necessarily the heaviest thing that grunge ever spat out by any means, you can definitely tell these guys were cut from the same cloth as bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains, only with a more R.E.M. level of intensity. The world of grunge had grown a little bit calmer in the post-Cobain world, and there was nothing wrong with the rock star that girls could introduce to their parents.
