10 Perfect Songs On Terrible Albums

8. This is England - The Clash

The entire downfall of the Clash feels like the great Greek tragedy of punk rock. While it was clear to anyone with eyes that the Sex Pistols weren't going to last very long, the words of Mick Jones and Joe Strummer felt like more than just your average rock and roll rebellion song, looking to tear down those corrupt with power and lead rockers into the next revolution. They almost went the distance, but Cut the Crap feels like the sad aftermath of a few too many bad decisions.

Having brought back Bernie Rhodes as their manager, Joe Strummer got the idea to fire Mick Jones and continue on with a whole new lineup of the Clash with Paul Simonon, which turned into one of the most regrettable records that a mainstream band have ever released. Though it's hard to really think of anything to salvage off of this project based on its questionable production, Joe Strummer stood by the fact that This is England is the last good Clash song, painting a grim look at the poverty going on during the Thatcher era.

Out of all the other songs on Cut the Crap, this feels like the vintage Clash that most of us remember, with Joe sounding depressed about not having any hope for the future and clinging to his motorcycle jacket even though he has to walk everywhere these days. The days of London Calling may have been gone for good, but The Clash at least had one more great song up their sleeves before calling it a day.
