10 Perfect Songs On Terrible Albums
7. Eminence Front - The Who
Out of all the bands to come out of the Flower Power era of rock and roll, the Who actually seemed to have a fairly good shelf life in the years that followed. Since Pete Townshend was known for his attention to detail and not dancing to anyone else's tune, these songs helped resonate with future generations of rock stars, from the punk crowds to Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam being a longtime fan of the group. Once we reached the '80s, it was hard for Pete to sound like the same angry young man.
For most of the album It's Hard, The Who seem to be smothered in the sounds of the time, with different synthesizers creeping into the mix and overtaking most of the songs half the time. And it seems that Pete knows that he's not at his best this time around either, if you listen to any of the lyrics that he says in Eminence Front. Even though this song has the same feel of the rest of the album, Pete is talking about how much the rock scene has changed since he was a kid, noting how quickly people forget about your ability to change the world around you.
If anything, this entire song gives away its message in the title itself, calling the rock and roll lifestyle just a front that businessmen put on to get the fans into the seats and bribing them out of their money. Since this would be one of the last Who records that we would see for a long time, it would make sense that Pete would lay it all on the line to tell us how much we're being ripped off.
