10 Perfect Songs That Were Written Incredibly Fast
6. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
There's a good case to be made for Led Zeppelin inadvertently paying for the mental stability of every single Guitar Center employee because of Stairway to Heaven. Despite having one of the most iconic guitar intros in the history of music, the entire song feels like a journey from the moment it starts, going from the soft and tender sounds of the acoustic guitar to Jimmy Page's iconic guitar solo that slowly takes us back down to Earth at the end. If you were to ask the band members about where it comes from though, even Robert Plant isn't quite sure.
When they were first cutting the track, Jimmy had initially just thought there was something to this semi classical guitar piece that he'd written, likening it to a poor man's rendition of a Bach composition. Once he had the basic skeleton of the song though, something almost paranormal happened when he played to the rest of the band, gathering at a cottage at nightfall and playing his ideas.
From the moment that Plant heard it, he says that the song proceeded to write itself, as he wrote down the first lyrics of the song almost involuntarily, being shocked when he actually had the finished lyrics in front of him. That's the sign of a great song though. If you have something that is so hypnotic that you can black out while listening to the music, you have something special on your hands.
