10 Perfect Supergroups In Rock History

4. Velvet Revolver

There's no logical way to replace someone like Axl Rose. For as insufferable as he has been both in Guns N Roses' heyday and beyond, there was no way that anyone could replicate his energy whenever the band played live, delivering just the right kind of sleazy rock and roll that drove audiences nuts. The rest of Guns still wanted to get their rocks off though, and Velvet Revolver is about as close as we've ever come to getting a second iteration of what the Appetite era should have been.

Being comprised of Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum from Guns, the band settled on Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots as their frontman, bringing in an alternative flair that was missing from the old days of rock and roll. Since it was never that cool to live the party lifestyle, Velvet Revolver gave Scott the right outlet to become the glamorous rock star that he always was inside, channeling something between Axl, Jim Morrison, and Iggy Pop whenever he performed, while the band dialed in songs that were more metallic than Guns like Sucker Train Blues and Slither.

Then again, bringing in someone like Scott was also a recipe for disaster as well, with the band falling out due to Scott's misbehavior with drugs and everyone splitting off to do their own solo projects. Most of the classic Guns lineup has gotten back together, but even without Scott with us anymore, Slash has said that there may be some unfinished business with Velvet Revolver.
