10 Pop Albums That Are Perfect From Front To Back
7. Demon Days - Gorillaz
When Gorillaz first graced MTV's channels in the early '00s, everyone seemed pretty enamored with this fun little virtual band. Though tracks like "Clint Eastwood" were fun to bob along to, was there really a future behind Damon Albarn's side project than just a novelty act? Hooking up with Danger Mouse for the followup, Albarn went into the studio and proved that Gorillaz was far from just kids' stuff.
Written around the idea of an apocalypse, Demon Days details every kind of fear that comes with going into the unknown darkness. That kind of approach sounds absolutely dreadful when talking about a pop release, but the actual tone of these tracks are fantastic, from the dirty synth that coats "Dirty Harry" to the greatest bassline of the past 30 years in "Feel Good Inc."
Albarn is not alone in making this masterpiece though. Going through his entire musical palette, Albarn brings in everyone from De La Soul to MF Doom to Ike Turner to even actor Dennis Hopper to bring this zany craziness to life. Gorillaz may have been fun at their inception, but this left turn into serious pop hooks showed that this cartoon hybrid was not a fluke. Demon Days is a pop record first and foremost, but it is by far the most fun you will ever have while feeling sonically confined.
